Today the wind and the rain blast the plains and the grasses and through the melted ruins of Fort Union (1863-1891).  The blistering sun bakes its remains. This old place is a story of Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas, Navajo and Utes.  It is a place of the railroad, the Santa Fe Trail, the Civil War, politics and women.  Among others, the place was home to the 9th Cavalry, made up of entirely black enlisted men who found themselves campaigning against Apaches.
